We are definitely knocking on Spring’s door here in North Dakota. Today, it was 42 degrees! A welcomed change to the 20’s below last week. I found these sprinkles at Michael’s. They are so fun. I haven’t really used sprinkles that much in my baking career, but I hope to use them more. I smile at this picture because I was looking for a background for the donuts. Then I was thinking wait a minute what better backdrop than glaze and sprinkles!
What do we know about sprinkles?
In England they are called “hundreds and thousands”
In certain regions, they are called jimmies.
In the Netherlands, they are called hagelslag or hail storm in Dutch.
Who invented them? Seems that no one really knows!
Here is a neat YouTube video on how rainbow sprinkles are made:
Let’s make donuts!
Can you see the 4 cinnamon hearts? Cool, huh?
Baked Donuts (Back to my Southern Roots)
2 1/2 Flour
1 tsp. Baking Powder
1/2 tsp Baking Soda
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 nutmeg
1 cup sour cream
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup butter, melted
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 tsp vanilla
2 eggs
GLAZE
2 cups powered sugar
1/4 cup milk
Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Mix dry ingredients minus the sugar in one bowl. In another bowl, combine sour cream, brown sugar, butter, vegetable oil, and vanilla. Add eggs, then the flour mixture. Put mixture in a bag and cut off the tip. Pipe batter in the donut pan. Bake 10 minutes. Make the glaze. Dip and let the donuts harden and cool 30 mins.
It’s feeling like spring around here after a really cold snap. These cupcakes just scream SPRING! Gotta have the sprinkles!
Matt and I took a quick trip to Sica Hollow State Park in South Dakota. It was just before sunset and very pretty to see the water running through the snow. I hope to go back in the summer because I think it will be equally beautiful.
He makes springs pour water into the ravines; it flows between the mountains. Psalm 104:10
Happy Spring!!
